I joined a group a while back called the Freelancers Union based in New York, NY. While I mainly joined for marketing benefits (you get a free business listing when you sign up), I found a well organinzed resource for everything freelance. The group is dedicated to freelancers’ rights regarding fair employment, payment guarantees and taxation.
Other resources include tax preparation tips, a client scorecard where you can warn others about those crazy-assed clients that made your life hell and my favorite – the contract creator. New York residents can enjoy access to more affordable medical insurance, while freelancers nationwide can access life, dental and disability insurance.
Membership is free and definately worth it. My listing has already generated some work for me.
